Overview
Global Road Maintenance Systems (GRMS) successfully tendered and delivered the resurfacing works on the iconic Goodwill Bridge in Brisbane, a high-profile active transport link connecting South Bank and the Brisbane CBD. The project involved replacing the existing slippery surface, improving safety for cyclists and pedestrians, and extending the longevity of the bridge deck.
Challenge
The bridge’s ageing surface had become slippery in wet conditions, leading to an increased risk of crashes and slips for pedestrians and cyclists. The works needed to be delivered on a tight program, in a heavily trafficked pedestrian and cycle environment, with strict environmental controls in place to protect the Brisbane River.
Solution & Execution
- Removal and disposal of over 50 tonnes of grinding waste from the existing surface.
- Installation of a new waterproofing membrane to protect the bridge deck.
- Application of a custom-coloured, trafficable deck surface using a 0.8mm–1.5mm aggregate to maximise skid resistance and durability.
- Upgrading of bridge deck lighting to improve visibility and safety.
- Installation of new line marking and lane delineation to clearly separate cyclists and pedestrians.
Results
- The new deck surface has significantly increased skid resistance, improving safety in wet weather conditions.
- Clear lane delineation has reduced conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians.
- The upgraded lighting has further enhanced user safety during night-time use.
- The project has delivered a durable, low-maintenance surface that ensures long-term value for the Queensland Government.
